Some
Background - how My
Habitat came to be
My
Habitat quite simply arose from my
own need for household products that don't contain toxic chemicals,
starting with a way to control an infestation of spider webs and ants
in the house I had moved into. I was not willing to use
poisons
that had make me ill in the past, but I really needed to deal with
these problems. So,
with many years' experience in the
organics industry, I began experimenting with natural
substances
to find out what would do the job, and the result was WebMaster, a mix of
vinegar and essential oils that was amazingly effective. From
there, I went on to create a range of other products based on essential
oils and natural ingredients.
In the process I have faced all kinds
of difficulties, just like everyone else with a good idea on the way to
commercialisation. But, more importantly, I have learned an
enormous amount. The research necessary to formulate effective
products has shown me the real extent of the threat to our health and
our environment of the toxic chemicals we use so cavalierly in our
everyday lives, and I have become a passionate advocate for making that
information more easily available to everyone.
I believe we all do the best we can
with the information we have. So when TV ads tell us that the
enemy is germs and if we want to do the best thing for our family we
will use whatever product they are promoting to kill them, it all
sounds innocuous and good, and we rush out to buy the product and use
it. But there is little mention of what the products are made of,
or the effects those ingredients might have apart from killing germs.
Many of them are so toxic that I believe most people would not
want to use them if they knew. The range of problems caused by
these chemicals is appalling - everything from allergies to cancer,
infertility, birth defects, brain and nerve damage. Yet we place
ourselves and our children in intimate contact with them 24 hours a
day. What are we doing???
There is a better way, if only people
can get the information that will make them aware that there is even a
problem. So I have been very active in trying to spread this
message and to offer alternatives. See more on the Ingredients and Health
pages.
The range originally included Debug fo cupboards and Mossie Net for personal outdoor use.
These have been dropped
from the range of the requirement for registration as a
pesticide, even though they don't contain any poisons. The
cost of that registration was prohibitive at this stage of the
business, as it has been for many good non-toxic alternatives.
However, I believe that the existing range of
products will meet most of your household cleaning needs, as they do
mine. It's
very satisfying to create in your
home a clean, pest-free environment that smells great, knowing that the
products you are using are having only a positive effect on the
family's health, rather than compromising it. Bring the garden indoors
with these simple, natural essential oil products and feel invigorated
and healed by them.
I
hope you enjoy
the products as much as I do.
