How healthy is your habitat?    Don't join the endangered species list.

Many people work to preserve the habitats of native and endangered species, but perhaps give less consideration to their own habitat.  Many, also aware of the dangers of eating food contaminated with pesticides and other chemicals, eat only organically grown food or grow their own.  But they may not be aware of the toxins in everyday household products, or perhaps are unable to find good enough alternatives.

I believe lack of awareness is one reason many people are using dangerous household products in spite of maintaining otherwise healthy lifestyles.

  • Many household products don't have ingredients listed on the label.

Food producers must by law display their full ingredients list on the label, but there is no such requirement for products like insecticides and household cleaners.  So we may not have any real idea what chemicals we are introducing into our homes or using on our bodies, and yet we are in intimate contact with these chemicals day in and day out.  Bacteria and fungi can be dangerous, but the toxic chemicals in some cleaning products are even more dangerous.

I believe it is vitally important to find good alternatives that work, and at the same time have positive health benefits instead of compromising our health.

And there are well-proven alternatives - age-old methods of cleaning and deterring pests.  The petrochemicals (from crude oil) that are the basis of modern cleaning products have really only been developed in the past 50 years or so, and we are only now seeing the full environmental and health impact of their widespread use.  But vinegar, for instance, has been safely used for cleaning and healing since the time of the ancient Sumerians, 7,000 years ago.

Essential oils, too, have a long history.  Their use can be traced as far back as the Egyptians, and across Asia and Europe  to the present day.  In modern times, essential oils like Ti-tree and Lemon Myrtle have been shown to be more powerful germicides than their petrochemical counterparts.  The same is true of the oils used in My Habitat MouldMaster with regard to moulds and fungi.
